Happy National Black Poetry Day! This holiday occurs every year on October 17. The date was chosen in 1985 as Black Poetry Day because on October 17, 1761, Jupiter Hammon became the first published Black author in the United States.

We encourage you to support black poets who have been active in our Vallejo scene. Of all the publishing sectors, poets are under compensated for their efforts. Support them on Black Poetry Day and all year round!

Here’s just a few with books and/or albums: Lee Lee, Poetic Old Soul, G.O. 284, Dr. Genea Brice, Poet E Spoken, QR Hand, Lady-D., Kyrah Ayers, Linda Bryant, Lyrical Comp, Courtship’s Lovesong, Juanita J. Martin, Jeffrey Williams, Aqueila M. Lewis Ross, and Jacalyn Eyvonne.

Vallejo Poetry Society was founded in 2018 by Erika Snyder, Daniel Badiali, and D.L. Lang to serve as a resource for local poets. We encourage you to join our mailing list and follow us on social media for the most up to date event announcements, networking with other poets, and publication opportunities.
